The Proffessor had suggested inviting friends and family, so there were various people Rogue did not know. But she admired everyone’s costumes all the same. There were witches and devils, Spartans and clowns. Kitty made the cutest fairy. She wore a tiny dress made up of leaves, sparkling wings, and little else. Jean was a 20’s flapper with a very pretty, short black dress and Storm was the heroine Wonder Woman.

A tinge of jealousy struck her heart, but Rogue pushed it away. This year she promised herself she wouldn’t let it bother her. She was done feeling sorry for the fact she couldn’t wear the type of costumes her friends could. Still, she had the urge to leave the party. Maybe a breath of fresh air would help.

When Rogue heard footsteps approaching, she wiped her eyes dry.

“Mind if I join you?”

Rogue turned to see a beautiful angel standing at the foot of the steps.

“Sure,” Rogue smiled at the woman, “There’s room enough for two.”

“Hey, you okay?” the angel asked her.

“Yeah, Ah just…Ah don’t like mah costume all that much.” She'd borrowed one of Hank’s lab coats and stethoscope. Seeing as Hank was twice her size, the lab coat was anything but flattering.

The angel seemed to think for a moment, then she spoke.

“Tonight is the one night everyone can be whoever they want. No fear of ridicule, no judgment. I say, if you don’t like your costume, change it!”

“Ya know what? Y’all are right! Ah should wear something Ah want.” Rogue stood up with the intention to wear the costume she’d purchased specifically for the party. She paused at the door to thank the angel, “Ah’m sorry, Ah didn’t catch y'alls name—” But the angel was gone.

The angel watched from afar as Rogue smiled, she smiled as well. It wasn’t often she was able to help her daughter. Making sure no one was around, Mystique returned to her own form. She waited until Rogue went back inside, then left quickly after that.
